Walking in your Shadow
When Mr Shadow passed away in September 2020, my Aunt Mair and I collaborated on writing a poem in his honour. Mair sketched some beautiful pictures of Shadow, from some of our favourite photos. Both the poem and the sketches reference many of the places found in our walks, we hope you enjoy…
Mr Shadow
Walking crisp and wintry ways
Sleeping soft in summer’s days
Shadow, strong and gentle
Loyal, swift and sure
Roaming o’er the Purbeck Hills
And in our hearts for ever more
Running zigzags through the fields
Swimming smoothly like a seal
Shadow warm and golden curled
Free-footed, playful, bright
Tracing old Jurassic trails
Chasing gleams of morning light
Plodding up Nine Barrow Down
Lapping water meant for cows
Shadow, either fast and quick
Or, close by and steady
Up and down the narrow lanes
Rabbits are you ready?
Down to Chapman’s, water’s clear
Up the Square for pasties, beer
Shadow, handsome, agile, brave
‘leave it’, ‘wait’, ‘come round’
In the duck pond with a ‘splash’
He’s always fun but won’t BEHAVE!
Walking in your shadow
Along the paths and barrow
Mr Shadow, friend and loved one
Happy memories that we dream
Roaming with you o’er the hills
You’re always in our team
